Where does French toast come from? This may seem like a no-brainer, but you might be surprised to find out that it doesn’t actually come from France!
At least, the name doesn’t. According to Wonderopolis, the name “French toast” actually comes from England in the 1600s!
The French word for this meal is “pain perdu”, which translates into “lost bread”. This is because the original French toast dishes made use of the stale, crusty parts of bread that people were going to throw away. Instead of deciding the bread is no good, they decided to coat it with an egg batter and add it to a pan.

How to Make French Toast
- Add 2 eggs, ¼ cup of milk, ½ - 2 tsp of sugar, ½ tsp of cinnamon and ½ tsp of vanilla essence to a bowl and whisk until equally combined. Set aside.
- Heat a splash of oil in a pan. Then soak both sides of the bread in the milk mixture and add it to the pan. Cook on each side for 2-5 minutes or until golden brown. Repeat this step for the 5 remaining slices.
- Serve with maple syrup and strawberries.
Can You Store French Toast?
French toast can go bad sort of fast. It will get soggy or chewy, losing its fluffy quality. But if you are looking to refrigerate it, you can probably do so by covering your leftovers with plastic wrap before it gets dried out.
It has to be refrigerated within two hours from when it was first cooked; otherwise, it might go to waste.
It is possible to freeze French toast using wax paper and freezer bags, and when it comes time to reheat it, put it in a pan with some oil and water. That should bring it back to life in no time!
