About the Recipe
What’s the most memorable thing about a cake? For most people, it’s the frosting. While the entire dessert should taste amazing, it’s the frosting that can really take the cake…literally! Your choice of frosting can make or break the entire dish.
An all-time favourite frosting type is made with buttercream because it produces such a rich and sugary flavor mixed with a soft, creamy texture. It simply melts in your mouth, making it a highly sought-after dessert topping for many kinds of baked goods.
Today, we’re going to show you how obsessed we are with buttercream frosting by teaching you how to make it using our very own recipe! This recipe can frost 1-2 cakes or 24 cupcakes at a time. (But let’s be honest, we all love eating it right out of the mixing bowl, too).
Traditional Whipped Icing Vs. Buttercream
Some of the birthday cakes and confectionaries you might find at your local grocery store or baker might have a different kind of icing on them. This is known as whipped icing or traditional frosting.
Traditional icing only uses powdered sugar and whipped cream to create a light layer of frosting to coat cakes with. Buttercream, on the other hand, uses a combination of butter, powdered sugar, milk, and other flavors. Many prefer the rich flavour profile and thick texture of buttercream, while others believe traditional icing is easier to make.
We’re curious: What’s your favourite kind of frosting? Let us know, and perhaps we will show you how to make that kind next!

Storing Your Buttercream Frosting
If sealed in an air-tight container, buttercream frosting can last in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. If it’s already been put on top of your cake, it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge as long as it’s covered up. However, you should eat it within a few days.
