About this Recipe
These are truly the best chocolate chip waffles! They are golden and crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside just as waffles should be. And let’s not forget the chocolate chip surprises in every bite – Yum! Whether you decide to serve these as breakfast or dessert they are sure to go down well.
Another thing I love about waffles is the delicious smell that fills the kitchen while they are cooking. Every time I make them people gather around in the kitchen with their plates. The only thing that differs are their topping choices of course. Some go plain while others opt for syrup, chocolate sauce, strawberries and even whipped cream.
On this occasion, I had some spare banans and chocolate sauce so I went with that but feel free to serve them as you please! In case you’re in the mood for even more chocolate then try these delicious Chocolate Waffles too!
Chocolate Chip Waffle Ingredient
- Plain or all-purpose flour: Use all-purpose or plain flour to make the waffles. Avoid substitutiting it with self-raising flour as you may not get the same results.
- Baking powder: Is a leavening agent that is used to help the waffles rise.
- Salt: Balances out the flavors in the homemade chocolate chip waffles.
- Sugar: Add granulated sugar to the waffles for sweetness. This recipe calls for 2 tablespoons but you can add 3-4 tablespoons if you prefer sweeter waffles.
- Eggs: Help the waffles to rise and make them fluffy.
- Milk: Add any milk of your choice to the batter to suit your dietary requirements.
- Melted and cooled unsalted butter: Melt unsalted butter in a microwave and leave to cool before adding it to the batter.
- Chocolate chips: Add dark or milk chocolate chips to the waffle batter.
How to Make Chocolate Chip Waffles in Waffle Maker
- Start by adding all of the dry ingredients to a bowl. Add all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder and salt to a bowl. Mix until well combined.
2. Next, you will need to combine the wet ingredients in a separate bowl. Pour melted unsalted butter, milk and eggs into a bowl and whisk well.
Tip: Make sure the unsalted butter is cool before mixing. To melt unsalted butter warm it in a microwave for 30-second intervals until liquid.
3. Now, you need to combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture, add the chocolate chips and stir. At this stage, be careful not to overmix the batter and make sure there are still a few lumps.
4. Heat a waffle maker then grease it lightly with oil or butter. Then pour the batter into the waffle maker and cook for 10 minutes or follow the manufacturer’s instructions. I usually add 3/4 cup of batter to the waffle maker but the cup size depends on the size of your waffle maker.
5. Once the waffle is done add it to a plate. Repeat this step for the remaining batter.
6. Serve chocolate chip waffles with toppings like whipped cream, chocolate sauce, syrup and fruit for breakfast or dessert. Enjoy!
Tips and Tricks
- Waffle maker: If you have not got a waffle maker, you can still make this recipe. You can make these waffles with a griddle pan. You need to grease your pan before pouring in your batter. I picked this tip from Jamie Oliver from one of his pan waffle recipes. So basically you would be making a griddle pan waffle. Feel free to divide your waffles into portions or serve them as a whole.
- Waffle Batter: Make sure that you don’t overmix your waffle batter as this will make the waffles tough. It’s ok if you can still see some lumps in your batter.
- Healthy chocolate chip waffles: For a healthier chocolate chip waffles use wholewheat flour instead of all-purpose flour.
- Alternatives: Feel free to add less or more chocolate chips to suit your taste.
FAQs
Pancake and waffle mix are similar but not the same. They both contain flour, milk, eggs and a raising agent. However, waffle batter tends to be thicker and contains more butter or oil in comparison to pancake batter.
If your waffles taste too eggy then you may have added too many eggs to the batter. In other words, If the ratio of eggs to flour isn’t correct then it will result in an eggy waffle. To avoid this stick to the recipe and use the correct amount of eggs, don’t be tempted to add more.
It can be so disappointing when you bite into a waffle and it is still raw inside. This happens when the waffles are not cooked for long enough or the waffle maker is too hot. Make sure you read the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure that you are using the waffle maker correctly.
Some waffle recipes include buttermilk which can make the waffles heavy. To avoid this make sure you use a good recipe and do not add more buttermilk than required to the batter. Alternatively, you can choose a recipe that does not include buttermilk.
