There are many ways to make broccoli, but this recipe is one of my favorites. It is quick, easy and delicious!
How to Choose the Best Produce for Sauteed Broccoli
Before you start making broccoli recipes at home, here’s what to look for at the market:
- Select broccoli with bright green heads, tight florets and firm stalks. Avoid broccoli that’s yellowing, old-looking or wilting. And give the broccoli a good sniff. If they should be odorless.
- Always use fresh lemons for this detox water recipe. Look for fruit that has some give when you squeeze it. That’s a sign of ripeness. Also, avoid any citrus with scars, bruises, or discoloration. The skin should be vibrant and waxy, not dried out.
- Choose onions that are heavy, firm and without bruises. They should have a tough and papery yellow outer skin.
Ingredients
To make this tasty side you will need the following:
- 1 large loose broccoli
- ½ an onion
- ¼ of a fresh lemon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil
How to Saute Broccoli?
Start by washing the broccoli. Remove the large stem and chop or break of the florets. Peel onion, slice thinly and set aside.
- Add a splash of olive oil to a pan. Once the oil is hot, add the onions, stir and cook for 2-3 minutes on a low/medium heat.
- Add the broccoli florets to the pan. and season with salt to taste, pepper to taste and stir. Cook on a medium heat for 5 minutes.
- Squeeze a splash of lemon juice over the florets and stir for another 2 minutes or until done.
NB: Option to grate lemon zest over broccoli to intensify the flavour.
Alternatives
broccoli side dishes are quite popular and there are several different alternative and variations.
- Garlic lemon broccoli are a popular alternative. Simply use garlic instead of onions.
- lemon butter broccoli can be made by swapping olive oil with butter.
- I use fresh lemons for this recipe, but you can also use a couple tablespoons of concentrated lemon juice instead. Also, Feel free to leave out the lemon altogether if you don’t have them to hand.
- I use black pepper for this recipe but feel free to use white pepper, chilli flakes or paprika.
- Feel free to swap olive oil with sunflower oil, vegetable oil, rapeseed oil and more.
Recipe FAQs
The broccoli florets will turn bright green when they are done. Feel free to keep cooking the florets if you prefer them softer.
Yes, you can. Leave the broccoli to cool and add to a freezer bag. Label the bag and freeze for up to 6 months. In order to thaw the broccoli, you can refrigerate them overnight or microwave in a plate.
Sautéed broccoli can refrigerated for up to 3-4 days in an air tight container.
