  • Broccoli: For the best flavor, use at least one fresh broccoli. Wash the broccoli to remove dirt before cooking.
  • Garlic: Select fresh cloves for this recipe; however, you can also use garlic powder.
  • Ginger: For the best flavor, use fresh ginger. You can also use ginger powder or paste.
  • Soy sauce: Use good-quality soy sauce for the best flavor.

  • Vegan: Soy beef is a vegan-friendly protein alternative with a taste, texture, and protein component similar to actual beef. It is known as teaspoon (textured soy protein), and soy is the main ingredient.
  • Add-ins: Add mushrooms to make the one-pan beef and broccoli recipe more meaty. Add carrots if you want more veggies. Add ginger to the pan for a deep, spicy flavor.
  • Broccoli: Feel free to pan fry the broccoli with a splash of oil instead of boiling.

How to Make Chinese Beef and Broccoli

  1. Cut the beef into medium chunks and add them to a bowl.

2. Add the Shaoxing wine, water, cornstarch, baking soda, salt, and a little oil, then rub everything into the meat. Let it marinate for about 15 minutes.

3. While that's marinating, mix some water, dark soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, and cornstarch in a bowl and set it aside.

4. In the meantime, bring a pot of water to a boil, add some salt, then toss in the chopped broccoli and cook it for 1-3 minutes. Drain the water and set the broccoli aside.

5. Heat some oil in a pan, add the beef, and cook it on both sides for 5-7 minutes on medium/high heat, or until it's done. Once cooked, remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.

6. Add a splash of oil to the same pan, then add garlic and ginger. Cook on low-medium heat for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

7. Stir in the sauce you made earlier and let it simmer on low heat for 3-5 minutes until it thickens.

8. Add the beef and broccoli back in, stir it all together so everything's coated in the sauce. Let it cook for another 1-2 minutes on low heat, then remove from heat.

9. Serve the Asian-style beef and broccoli, and sprinkle some sesame seeds on top if you like! Serve with rice, noodles, and Chinese Spring Rolls.

How to tenderize beef?

Use a meat mallet or a blunt object to pound the beef and break down the muscle fibres in the meat.

Ingredients

  • 420 420- 450 g of flank steak sliced
  • 1 tablespoon of Shaoxing wine
  • 2 tablespoon of water
  • 2 tablespoon Cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • A drizzle of Oil sunflower or vegetable
  • 1 whole broccoli chopped

Sauce

  • ½ cup water
  • 3 tablespoon of dark soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce
  • White pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon of honey optional
  • 2 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 3 garlic cloves crushed
  • 1 tablespoon of ginger
  • A splash of sunflower oil
  • Sesame seeds to garnish optional

Instructions

  • Chop the beef into equal-size medium chunks, and then add them to a bowl.
  • Add a few drops of sunflower oil, salt and pepper, soy sauce, honey and lemon juice to the bowl with beef and rub the ingredients into the meat. Let the meat marinate in this mixture as you prepare the broccoli.
  • Chop the broccoli and a whole onion. Heat up some sunflower oil in a pan and add the garlic and onions. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until fragrant.
  • Then, add the beef chunks and cook on both sides for 5-7 minutes on medium heat. Add the broccoli for another five minutes and stir.
