Easy Puff Pastry Apple Pie Ingredients
- Granny smith apples: Select ripe granny smith apples for this puff pastry apple pie. They are slightly tart and work well in apple pie.
- Cinnamon: This will add a sweet aromatic flavor to the filling.
- Nutmeg: I like to grate a whole nutmeg for this recipe however, feel free to use ground nutmeg instead.
- Ginger: This will add sweet spices to the filling. Use fresh ginger or ground ginger.
- Lemon juice: This will prevent the apples from changing color once they are sliced.
- Salt: This will balance out the sweetness of the filling.
- Unsalted butter: When combined with the filling ingredients unsalted butter helps to caramelize the apples as they bake in the oven.
- Flour: Is combined with the butter to make the filling.
- Water: Loosens the consistency of the filling.
- Granulated sugar: For sweetness.
- Egg: Combine with water and brush on top of the pastry to give the pie its beautiful golden color.
- Puff pastry: Buy good quality shop-bought puff pastry for this recipe.
Tips and Substitutions
- Apple sizes: Cut the apples thinly so that they bake quickly. If the apples are thicker, they will bake more slowly in the oven.
- Apple type: I like to use granny smith apples but you can mix them with sweet apples or use sweet apples instead. It all boils down to your preference.
- Drain apples: Make sure you drain the apples when adding them to the pastry. Do not add the remaining juices as it will make the filling watery.
- Filling: If you prefer a softer apple filling, cook the apples on the stove for about 7-10 minutes before combining them with the butter mixture and adding them to the pie.
- Topping: If you can't get puff pastry, you can top this pie with a few alternatives instead. For example, top this pie with a crumb. Make the crumb by combining flour, sugar, cinnamon, and butter in a bowl using a fork. Then, sprinkle the topping on top of the apple filling and bake. You can also use shortcrust pastry or filo pastry instead. Make them from scratch or buy them readymade.
