This is the perfect comforting, homey drink to get you through the winter. It is easy to make and can be prepared in less than 10 minutes. This homemade hot chocolate tastes just as good as the hot chocolate from your favorite coffee shop - I promise!
I am not a big fan of instant hot chocolate because the chocolate flavor is not that intense. So, to add more flavor, I used cocoa powder and chocolate chips in this recipe. I also added marshmallows, whipped cream, and a chocolate flake.

Why This Recipe Works
- This chocolate drink recipe is easy to follow, comforting and delicious.
- It can be made with four easy-to-find ingredients.
- Double or triple the recipe for a larger crowd.
- Add your favorite toppings like sprinkles or Quick White Chocolate Sauce (2-Ingredient).
Ingredients
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
- Milk: I use full-fat milk for this recipe, but you can also use almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk. The type of milk you use will affect the taste of the drink.
- Cocoa powder: Use good-quality Dutch unprocessed cocoa powder for the best flavor.
- Sugar: Sweetens the drink, but you can add any other sweetener.
- Chocolate chips: You can swap them with chunks or a chopped chocolate bar instead.
Tips and Substitutions
- Flavor: For a more decadent hot chocolate, add 2 cups of chocolate chips. For a milky hot chocolate, add 4 cups of milk.
- Chocolate chips: Swap milk chocolate chips for dark chocolate if you prefer a bittersweet taste.
- Quantity: This recipe serves 3 people. If you want to serve more or less people, change the ingredients accordingly. For example, for 2 servings, use 2 cups of milk, 2 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1-2 tablespoon of sugar, and ¾ cup of chocolate chips.
