Green smoothies have become extremely popular over the years. They include mostly green nutritious fruits and vegetables.
Here are a few things to remember when building a green smoothie:
- Frozen bananas, avocados or yogurt can be used to make the base of a green smoothie.
- Water or plant-based milk can be used to loosen the consistency of the green smoothie
- Add your favourite greens to this smoothie. Some popular choices include spinach, kale, lettuce, celery, mint and broccoli.
- To sweeten a green smoothie, add pineapples, mango, apples, dates, maple syrup or honey.
Benefits of the Ingredients Used to Make the Creamy Green Smoothie
Frozen Bananas are an important part of this smoothie because they are rich in potassium and help to create a sweet creamy base. It is important to make sure that the bananas are frozen in order to achieve a good texture. You can buy frozen bananas or make your own by peeling bananas, chopping them into pieces and freezing them in a freezer bag for at least 12 hours. Bananas can be frozen for up to six months.
Avocados are a nutrient dense super-food that lower cholesterol and they also contribute to the lovely creamy texture of this smoothie.
Spinach give the smoothie it’s vibrant green colour. It also is rich in iron, vitamin K, A, C, B2, and is known to lower blood pressure and improve health. You can use frozen spinach or fresh spinach for this recipe.
Celery is another nutrient dense zero calorie super-food! It has anti-inflammatory properties that promote gut health and can help to regulate digestion. I use fresh celery in this recipe.
Apples are a great natural sweetener. They are rich in vitamins and great for weight loss. I use green apples in this recipe but feel free to use any apple of your choice.
Almond milk is a nutritious plant-based milk. It helps to loosen the consistency of the green smoothie. How much milk you add to this smoothie is up to you. If you prefer a thicker smoothie then go for less milk and if you want a thinner smoothie then add more.
You have the option to add a sweetener if the smoothie is not sweet enough for you. Dates are a great natural sweetener, or you can go for honey or maple syrup.
How to Make a Creamy Green Smoothie
- Start by preparing the fruits and vegetables. Wash and clean the apples, celery sticks and spinach. Peel and de-seed the avocado. Then, remove the root from the apples and celery sticks.
- Then, add 1 frozen banana, 3 chopped celery sticks, 2 chopped apples, 1 avocado and 3-4 cups of spinach to a smoothie maker. Pour in 2-3 cups of almond milk, 1-2 tsp of maple syrup/honey (optional) and blend until smooth.
- Pour the smoothie into a mason jar or cup and enjoy! ?
NB: This smoothie serves 2-3 people. Feel free to double or half the portion to serve as many people as you like.
Green Smoothie Variations
- You can use frozen avocados instead of fresh avocados.
- Frozen spinach can be used instead of fresh spinach.
- Some great alternatives to almond milk are coconut milk, sweetened soya milk and oat milk. You can also use water instead of milk.
- If you want to add some chill to this smoothie then add ½-1 cup of ice.
- To add a kick to this smoothie add 1-3 tbsp of fresh chopped ginger. If you don’t have fresh ginger, you can use ground ginger instead.
Can smoothies be kept overnight?
Yes. To store a smoothie overnight pour the smoothie into a mason jar and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
You can also freeze this smoothie in a mason jar for up to 2 months. Once you remove the smoothie from the freezer refrigerate it for 24 hours before drinking.
