That’s where this creamy, dairy-free chocolate banana smoothie comes in. At Sims Home Kitchen, we are VERY enthusiastic about our love for chocolate. So we had to find a way to add it to a healthy meal first thing in the morning.

How to Keep Your Morning Smoothie Healthy
Chocolate isn’t necessarily unhealthy. In fact, experts recommend a bit of dark chocolate each day. This superfood packs antioxidants and other nutrients. So, why not enjoy it in your morning smoothie?
The key to keeping this chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie in the breakfast zone instead of dessert is to keep the other ingredients in check. That’s why we make our smoothies with soy or almond milk. Not only are these plant-based milks dairy-free, but they are also less fattening than whole milk.
Fruit selections can also make a huge difference, of course. If you pack your breakfast smoothie with tons of fruit, you can end up with a sugar bomb for breakfast. This recipe, on the other hand, balances out a bit of fruit with peanut butter for protein and a surprising addition: avocado.
How to Make Healthy Dairy-Free Chocolate Banana Smoothies
Making this smoothie is simple. If the name “smoothie” didn’t give it away, here’s what you need to do: toss everything in a blender and blend away. It’s that easy!
To make this healthy and satisfying chocolate banana smoothie, you’ll need a few nutritious ingredients:
- ¾ cup soy or almond milk (go for unsweetened milk for the best nutrition)
- 1 Tbsp organic cocoa powder (again, unsweetened is best)
- 2 Tbsp peanut butter
- ½ a fresh orange
- 1 frozen banana
- Honey or agave nectar, to taste
- ½ avocado
- ¼ tsp fresh chia seeds
Ingredient Substitutions and Swaps
This combination of ingredients is guaranteed to give you a healthy and satisfying breakfast. The avocado and peanut butter are very satiating. While the orange packs vitamin C, banana brings potassium and creaminess to your smoothie.
However, there are a few quick and easy ingredient swaps if you don’t have everything.
- You can use any type of milk, including cow’s milk, if you’re not dairy-free or vegan
- Substitute peanut butter for another nut butter, such as cashew, almond or sunbutter
- If you don’t have an avocado, add another banana for creaminess
Tips to Blend a Chocolate Banana Smoothie
If some of your ingredients don’t blend all the way at first, or you still have large chunks of fruit in your smoothie, try adding a few ice cubes or ¼ cup of water. That should smoothen things out!
