Why use almond milk for a Strawberry Pineapple Smoothie?
Why did I choose almond milk for this smoothie recipe? First of all, I wanted to go for that extra dose of creaminess. In addition, almond milk is vegan and still full of protein and calcium. Therefore, it’s sure to give this smoothie a boost.
Coconut milk, cashew milk, hemp, oat or soy milk are other creamy plant-based milk options for a smoothie.
How to Select Produce for the Strawberry Pineapple Smoothie Recipe
Before you start making this smoothie at home, here’s what to look for at the market if you are using fresh ingredients:
- Look for strawberries that are bright and vibrant in colour and avoid strawberries that are unripe or discoloured. Always use fresh strawberries for this recipe.
- There a few ways to tell when a pineapple is ripe. One way is by squeezing the shell of the pineapple, it should be firm but slightly give way. Ripe pineapples also have a sweet smell at the bottom of the fruit. If there is no smell, then the pineapple is not ripe yet and if the smell is bitter then it may be overripe. Juicy, ripe pineapples are also often heavier than unripen pineapples and finally, you can pull the large leaves at the top (fonds), if they pull out easily then this is a sign that the pineapple is ripe.
