Are you wondering what to do with oatmeal? Check out my easy oatmeal recipes for breakfast. Recipes include berries, nut butter and more!
Once upon a time you would have NEVER caught me eating oatmeal. I remember having so many bad experiences with it as a child. I concluded that oatmeal was as a warm bowl of soggy goo and I decided to steer clear from it.
Fast forward to a few years ago when me and oats crossed paths again. It was the start of my health and fitness journey and I was learning about different breakfast options and I kept coming across oats so I knew I had to find away to add them to my diet.
I discovered that oats have so many health benefits and are very nutritious. The scientific name for oats is Avena sativa. They are a gluten free grain, high in vitamins, fiber, minerals and antioxidants. In addition, studies have shown that oats are good for weight loss and lowering blood sugar levels.
After learning all the benefits I decided to get busy and create different recipes that I could enjoy! Initially I started adding different healthy toppings to my bowl to make them more interesting. Some healthy toppings include:
- Fruits (berries, apple chunks, bananas, pears, apricots, figs etc)
- Seeds (pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds)
- Sugar and palm oil free nut butters (cashew butter, peanut butter and almond butter)
- Yogurt (Greek yogurt or dairy free yogurt)
- Organic dark chocolate and much more
NB: Avoid dried fruits as they are very high in sugar and calories. They are also known to cause problems when they are eaten in high quantities.
Despite what most people think oats are very versatile and can be used to make lots of different meals. For example you can make oat pancakes, oat bars and oat smoothies!
